The hardest part of F1 Fantasy team selection is not knowing who is quick. It is working out which five drivers and two constructors you can actually afford together, and what you give up to get there. The Team Builder does that arithmetic continuously. This is a tour of the controls that decide your lineup, what each number means, and the one control people most often misread.
Nearly all of this page is free, and you do not need an account. Every screenshot below was captured without one. Two extras need a Standard plan; both are in the table at the end.
Drivers on the left, constructors on the right. Same layout, same rules.
Anywhere on the row. Not the plus button.
The + and − buttons do not add or remove a driver. They are instructions to the optimizer: + means "whatever else you suggest, keep this one in", and − means "never suggest this one". Your own lineup is untouched either way. Press + and the row turns green: the button fills in, a rail appears down the left edge, and a small Included tag shows beside the name.
This confuses people who go looking for one.
The optimizer runs by itself, the moment you have five drivers and two constructors, and again every time you change anything — a pick, the budget, the chip, the model, your transfer settings. There is nothing to press and nothing to submit. If the tables below are empty, you are usually not at seven picks yet.
The tooltip on the + column header says "when you run the optimizer". Ignore that phrasing — there is no run step. It is our wording that is behind, not your understanding.
This is the part worth slowing down on.
One setting above the tables decides that column: Free transfers. The page cannot know your real allowance, so it assumes two — set it to what you actually have (0–3) before you read a Penalty, because Net Pts is computed from it.
The Absolute Best table below uses the same columns, with one difference: its last one is headed Blended rather than Net Pts. Same idea.
Your current team is always shown in the list, highlighted, with zero changes — so you can see at a glance whether moving is worth it at all. Sometimes the honest answer is that it is not.
Reachable answers "what should I do this week". Absolute answers "how far off the ideal am I". If the gap between them is small, stand still. If it is large and keeps growing, that is a wildcard conversation, not a transfer one.
At one end the optimizer chases points and ignores prices. At the other it chases price rises and accepts a lower score. The slider is the amount you are willing to give up — move it and the page re-solves. The Absolute list reshuffles immediately; the Reachable rows hold steadier, re-tagging themselves In range or Below range as the floor moves, and only reorder once you push the dial well up. Note the growth figure is a one-race projection, not a season-long compounding model.
There is no captain control in the Team Builder itself. You set it in the team bar: click a driver chip there to boost them, click again to remove it. Every row carries an x2 badge on the driver that row assumes is your captain — but read it carefully. On the highlighted Current row that is whoever you boosted in the team bar; on the suggested rows it is that lineup's highest-projected driver, chosen automatically. Under the Triple Captain chip the top pick shows x3 and the second x2. Worth remembering when you read a total: the boost applies to that driver's whole race weekend — qualifying, the sprint if there is one, and the race.

The optimizer is free for everyone, including people who never sign in. There is no trial, no metering and no sign-in wall on any of it — the two Standard extras above are the whole list.
Plenty of managers do this on a phone, minutes before the lock. The tables reshape into cards, Penalty shortens to Pen, and net points loses its label because it is the number your eye should land on anyway.
The Team Builder will make a recommendation — one line, one swap, and the net points it buys you. What it will not do is hide the arithmetic behind it: which transfers are free, which are charged, how far your squad sits from the ideal, and what you trade for a bigger budget next week. The decision is still yours.
Open the Team Builder, click seven rows, and watch it solve.
